Is Flash dead

I keep being told that there is no future for Flash. Javascript and HTML 5  are the only way to go.
Does anyone have some thoughts about this.
All the best
Andy

Flash isn't dead, on the contrary, its evolving. Full Flash computer games are being developed by numerous developers and companies. There is even a video on Adobe site which introduced a full flash 3D rally game. This is the argument i can give about flash.

I'm sure others can give you even more Happy

I wouldn't say its dead (far from it) but its future is really uncertain at the moment....and its not because HTML5 is any better, its because of pure propaganda by apple and constant pushing of HTML5. I'm seeing more and more job postings with HTML5/CSS3 requirements in my area. Fact is that HTML 5 is a half baked technology right now. The spec is not completed never mind implemented. All HTML5 features don't work well on several browsers. Yet loads of web devs and companies seem to be jumping on the bandwagon. What is HTML 5 bringing to the table that will displace flash, apart from a video tag? Flash was around before youtube, it has not always been about playing videos.

A lot of linux fanbois also support death of flash mainly because flash doesn't work that well on linux distros.  I think its about time Adobe makes a decision about porting their products on Linux platforms. That will actually make  a lot of people migrate to Linux.

It seems to me that Steve Jobs has become very arrogant. Many many people have invested a great deal of time and money learning and implementing flash . don't know why Jobs is so against it. BIG business I guess

I wouldn't say its dead, but it's no longer needed to make a great visual interface. And lets be serious, yes html 5 is not completely ready yet, but many new browsers and even the new IE supports most of if not all of the core functionality of the new HTML specs. Javascript and css has beefed up what they can do as well. And the great thing about them all is that they are all free and open sourced. I've seen some great site that use html5, javascript, and css. And the same goes for sites that are designed and run only flash action script. I guess I'm just saying flash is not dead. But it's no longer the only game in town to great web design

Nothing else can currently match what Flash can do. Nothing.

But if HTML5 can get beefed up and drinks its milk, Flash may one day have serious competition. HTML5 may be able to become an outright replacement for everything flash/actionscript 3.0 can do, but that day is not today. When it does do everything cool that flash can do, and it is 100% open source, that is the day flash would be in trouble.

But seeing as that day has not come yet, anybody tells you that flash is not the best web animation-video-audio-multimedia tool, is an idiot. Look at the facebook games... some web geeks are making millions using flash to build them. Today this is happening. Look at some Flash sites out there... simply mind blowing and HTML5 is nowhere close to it. Today this is happening and tomorrow flash is evolving into an even better tool. The way I see it... HTML5 will forever be trying to catch and match flash... but I doubt it will.

I predict Adobe will make Flash / Actionscript open source before HTML5 even gets close to it. Just so they will stay king of the industry for multimedia and animated web apps.

Html 5 is not going to be a replacement for flash. Lets all remember it is a mark up language. So you can't really compare the two. Flash was and is built to as platform to bring rich a multimedia and it allows designers to come up with great designs. Html5 looks to be setting up to be an alternative to flash for designers that don't want to or feel comfortable to work with flash. Lets be honest flash is monster to learn, and people are now starting to disable flash in there browsers just like how people once did with javascript. Check this out it's built using html5 http://www.openrise.com/lab/FlowerPower/

But what's the advantage in making flash open source ? If they make flash opensource then they might have to do the same for other adobe products. My gut feeling is that they would probably port it to linux distros to piss off apple, release a free open source edition and then a paid enterprise edition.

HTML5/CSS3 will be a great thing for web developers and we should  appreciate it without having to knockdown flash. It's not ready yet but lets hope so. It would be a great relief to achieve gradients, patterns, textures, beautiful typography, logos, rounded corners and many other things in HTML5/CSS3  without having to rely on graphic design skills.  I mean just imagine -struggiling with photoshop and obscure HTML/CSS markup and hacks to create common graphic effects, those days will be over!  Isn't that a great thing ??

It's possible for HTML5 and Flash to co-exist. This has nothing to do with Apple's evil agenda. They don't have to compete but if they can complement each other, that would be great for all developers.
